Collecting

I’m a collector. I collect anything that I feel has value. As an example, I collect headphones. Don’t ask me why. I just do. I own a pair of Sony noise canceling headphones, a pair of Sennheiser earbuds and headphones, and I’ve lost count of how many Apple earbuds I have in my possession. Last time I checked, I only have one pair of ears I carry around with me every day. What can I say? I like listening to my music my way.

For a time, I used to collect movies. I know it sounds strange, but it’s what I used to do. I couldn’t walk out of a video store without purchasing something. I own the entire Lord of the Rings collection. I also bought multiple versions of the Godfather collection, including the restored version, which I think is great. But if you’ve seen the Godfather a billion times like I have, the gold tones in the film are rather distracting. I can’t tell you how many different versions of the Alien collection I own either. Somewhere along the line I went crazy purchasing every set I could find. Yeah, I’m a fan. Now, don’t think I’m heavy on the drama, fantasy and sci-fi genres. My vice is owning all of the movies to the Bring It On collection. What can I say? They’re hilarious.

As silly as it sounds, I’ve gone insane with my music collection, too. How do I describe buying anything associated with Led Zeppelin without seeming like a lunatic? I own their earlier works, their box sets, their remasters, their remasters of remasters, their solo works, their tribute albums. I would go as far as stating I’m a Led Zep die-hard fan, but I won’t. I think my cloud collection speaks for itself. Additionally, I collect oldies albums from the 50’s and 60’s. What can I say? I like listening to those old tunes.

Topping off my list is my silly collection of food photos I’ve been snapping whenever I take the family out to eat. I have a lot of those. Call me OCD. I find food photos to be not only great images to salivate over, but also an awesome springboard to jump start meal ideas. I know. I’m strange. But I can attest they make great conversation pieces.

Okay, one more. I collect photos of a particular tree shedding its leaves in the fall. Once a year, I visit a specific spot in the woods to take the photo. I have many. I’m not sure when my fixation started, but it has kept me busy.

I think that’s it. I collect other stuff, too, but nothing as extravagant as Jerry Seinfeld’s collection of Porsche. Wouldn’t that be something? Where would I put them all? Don’t ask me.

Get the Ranger Martin trilogy now!

Do you collect anything?

  1. A good set of headphones is always important.
As for movies – I have three sets of the original trilogy of Star Wars on DVD – two special edition, one of the original unedited version.
I personally collect cool hats and toothpick holders. The toothpick holders started as a gag gift while on vacation and has become a scavenger hunt to find a ridiculous toothpick holder wherever my family travels.

  3. I collect photographs that I take myself. One day my computer will blow up because it cannot contain even one more.
I took photos of the sky and had so many I thought what the hell am I ever going to do with them. Then I decided to make calendars for everyone in the family (a very large family)as Christmas gifts.
Now I’m in an online birding group and I’ve got thousands of bird photos. This year the family got…you guessed it…Bird calendars! It is definitely an obsession—but a very enjoyable one!

    • I’ve always liked the sky. So many beautiful images come from the clouds. Your calendars must look incredible!

      • My family was very happy to receive those calendars (with everyone’s birthdays posted)…but, now it has become a Christmas tradition, so I’m committed! hahaha Guess I’ll have to keep on collecting!

  4. I inherited a beer mat collection, but it’s gone now. At school I collected blackboard dusters and stamps. These days I buy lots of things, but not necessarily as a collector. What I would like to collect if I had the money would be flintlocks; the very old guns that you see in duels.

  5. Collecting is such a beautiful thing. Its cool to have our likes of music. I collected the Quarter Dollars of all the 50 states and the Territories when I was living in the U.S.! Collecting is fun. 🙂

  6. Oh boy Jack, collecting itself is a hobby of mine.
To say I collect LOTR and Hobbit “stuff” is an understatement. All the books (multiple versions of each), statues, a few swords, all the movies (both extended and theatrical versions), etc. I’ve collected comics since I was a wee bairn, have a goodly collection of those now. My book library is close to a thousand strong. Japanese Katana (7 of those). I am now into a geocaching related hobby, Pathtags.
I also do collect movies of all genres (favorite though is sub-titled Chinese flicks), almost 550 dvd’s now. All catalogued of course.
Hmmmm, you just made me realize something though. I only have one crappy pair of headphones I use for computer gaming when the family is asleep. Shall have to rectify that, any suggestions? heh heh.

    • Love that you collect comics. Now I’m wondering if you have #1’s of any of them. I used to have a #1 of Man-Bat from the 70’s.

Seriously, the Sennheiser HD 202’s are pretty awesome. Deep bass. Strong punch to the music. Overall, a great pair for anything, really.

      • I have so many #1’s of so many non-descript comics that it just isn’t funny. I got them in the vain hope that they would really be something. Almost every one of them, did not. The one I am proud of, is #1 Metal Men. I have it shadow boxed, hanging on my wall. Also a few CGC graded ones: Wolverine: Son of Canada, and Wolverine: Origins #1 (Canadian Variant). I am a proud Canadian after all.

Thank you for the tip on the headphones, have already been looking into getting a pair.

  7. Love it, Jack! All thumbs on my phone here, but I’ve collected things/stuff all my life. Earliest: baseball cards, pencils, stickers, My Little Pony. Later in life: books, bottle caps, quotes, stamps, money (coins & paper), Jackie Chan & Hong Kong cinema stuff, art/pottery, and the list goes ever on! I might have to borrow some of your sweet headphones, tho. Very interesting post!

    • Baseball cards are great to collect. Ever collect hockey cards? That was our thing when growing. Jackie Chan movies sound great!

      • I have a few hockey cards about, Jack, but not too many. I’m not very knowledgeable about it, but it looks like a lot of fun (though I don’t get into the pugilistic aspect). My husband saw it once or twice in-person with friends (the St. Louis Blues, team, that is) and said it was really exciting except for the forced commercial/television breaks. Jackie Chan’s movies, while sometimes formulaic, are a lot of fun and very funny, some of the early to mid-period ones, anyway. Jackie makes you want to go back and watch silent movies, like Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, which I probably never would have appreciated were it not for him.

  8. I currently own four pairs of earbuds and a Sennheiser headset that a friend gave me some time ago. Funny how the stuff tends to accumulate…hehe.
